They say a picture is worth a thousand words, so today, I’m trading the long email for a chance to show you exactly what’s been happening across our community and at Parliament.

Urgent Update: State of Emergence Declared

Since I recorded the video above, the situation has moved rapidly. Premier Roger Cook has officially declared a State of Emergency in Western Australia to manage fuel distribution.

As I’ve warned for years, our lack of sovereign fuel reserves is a massive strategic risk.

Under International Energy Agency rules, member countries must hold 90 days of net oil import cover to provide a strategic buffer against global oil supply shocks. Australia currently holds less than 50 days. And has remained well below the 90 days since 2012.

According to the government, we currently have around 36 days of liquid fuels under our national Minimum Stockholding Obligations.

This includes not only fuel onshore and in pipelines but fuel on the seas in our coastal waters and Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), as well as unfinished crude in refineries.

Fuel actually produced and available in Australia counts for less than thirty days, so as long as the ships keep coming and the remaining two refineries keep working, the 36 days is the one to watch.

It is time we stopped relying on fragile global routes and started fast-tracking our own oil exploration, refining, and advanced manufacturing.

We have the smarts in WA; we just need the political will to be self-reliant.

A Reflection for the Easter Season

As we wrap up a demanding week of hearings and navigate the complexities of our current fuel situation, I am reminded of how important it is to step back and gain some perspective.

Easter is a significant time for many of us in Western Australia.

It’s a season that speaks of sacrifice, hope, and the promise of a new beginning.

Beyond the public holidays and the travel, Easter offers a profound opportunity to pause. Stepping into a church on Good Friday allows us to move past the noise of politics and the busyness of the week to truly reflect on the events that took place between that Friday and Easter Sunday.

It is a story of ultimate sacrifice followed by the greatest hope, a reminder that even in our darkest or most challenging moments, there is a promise of renewal and a path forward for us all.

In my work at Parliament, I am constantly reminded of the weight of responsibility we carry for one another. Easter reinforces that sense of duty, the idea that we are at our best when we look after our neighbours and our nation.

Rest: I hope you get the chance to put your feet up and recharge after a busy start to the year.
Family: Spend quality time with your loved ones; these are the moments that truly matter.
Safety: If you are heading out to visit family or making the most of the long weekend, remember that double demerit points are in effect from today, Thursday 2 April, through to Monday 6 April.

With more vehicles on the road and heightened frustrations over fuel, I urge you to be patient. Double demerits apply to speeding, mobile phone use, seatbelts, and red-light offences. Please drive safely, look after one another.
