My Story

I’m Phil Twiss and am honoured to serve the people of Western Australia in the Legislative Council. My journey into parliament has been anything but a straight path. My life was shaped in the searing heat of the red dust and beauty of the Pilbara—the saltwater life of Shark Bay, the trials of boarding school, the discipline of the Navy, and the joys and challenges of raising a large family.

I grew up in a family that believed in giving back. My parents—immigrants who made Australia their home—taught me the value of hard work, standing up for what’s right, and always leaving a place better than you found it. Those lessons have stayed with me right through my life.

As a troubled 16-year-old, I joined the Royal Australian Navy, where I discovered unbreakable bonds of mateship and the true meaning of service and sacrifice. After leaving the Navy, I worked in engineering, defence, and offshore oil and gas industries that built this state and gave me a deep respect for the people who keep them running. Along the way, my wife Meredith and I raised eight children, mostly on a single income, and mostly home educated. We’ve lived simply, worked hard, and asked little of the state.

I entered Parliament not for personal ambition, but because I care deeply about the future we’re building—for our children, our communities, and our freedoms. I believe in a government that respects the people it serves, protects their rights, and stays out of their way when it should.
